Welcome to Susan Hess Modern Dance!

Since 1981, Susan Hess Modern Dance has helped select independent Philadelphia dance artists with their professional development, and has challenged audiences with innovative, high-quality dance performances. 

It is our mission to serve emerging and professional choreographers, dancers, performance artists, and audiences in an environment where creativity and experimentation flourish.

Regular programming at SHMD includes:

• The Choreographers Project, our residency program for developing choreographers;
• The Masters Exchange, our occasional workshop series with established dance and performance artists;
• In Performance, our presentation series featuring the works of SHMD residents and internationally renowned performance artists.

We also present occasional salons, artist workshops, and special performances in collaboration with other area organizations.

Local instructors hold classes at the SHMD studio on a regular basis.  See our latest class schedule for information.
